Readers reviews of Felicity's War by Jean Fullerton

I am delighted to feature readers reviews of Felicity's War.

Beverley Ann Hopper

1941 London.

Felicity Fliss Carmichael catches her fiance Giles Cuthbert Naylor cheating and leaves him heading to her parents at St Winifred's Rectory.

Her sister Prue finds her with D.I. Timothy Wallace feeling worse for wear. Working for the Clarion newspaper she has a good job it's war time, and the Blitz is affecting the full city of London, as workers lives are changed, men are away, the ladies are taking over.

Fliss and Tim form a special bond in the book will they ever make it as a couple only time will tell for them both.

A lot of research goes into the book as we learn a lot more of the work force down  at the London dockside and also the Metropolitan Police to give some fascinating insights that blends into the chapters.

A remarkable story that was well worth the read. 5 stars.

This book was thoroughly enjoyable as it was a chance to catch up with the Carmichael family again. This time we heard Felicity’s story and how she met her love interest Tim Wallace, as usual the course of true love doesn’t run smoothly.

She has to overcome many obstacles including her mother’s disapproval of her lifestyle choices - women should be there to support their husbands and not have opinions of their own - but Felicity is determined to be her own woman even if it gets her into trouble with the police.

I found it easy to read and was eager the see how it ended, another great read from Jean. I hope this story will continue.

Well I have to say I have loved reading this book as the main character is such a strong young woman with strong views on life and how to live her own life.

Being an independent woman Felicity goes against tradition and will not be a traditional wife to any man. When she returns home early from work one day she gets an awful shock and leaves only to be found sitting in a graveyard feeling hurt and very drunk.

The man who comes across her is D I Timothy Wallace who  takes her to a shelter for safety.

This book is very entertaining and emotional but will take the reader on a wonderful journey.

5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well another excellent book by Jean. She does not fail to hook you in from the start and take you through an extremely challenging time for the Carmichael family.

Following on from the previous book around the elder daughter’s battle to be with the man she fell in love with, this time the story is about the youngest sibling Felicity( Fliss)

This story does remind you of the strength of all females throughout WW2. The bond they built amongst themselves to get through the difficult times. Not only that but when the inner strength and determination is shared to help others, then that person supports other females to so dig deep for the strength to survive.

Total respect to Fliss, for continuing her job as a reporter, follow passionately in her political beliefs and the constant fight at home with her mother who opposes everything that she does. The character of Fliss can be felt at each step in her life and even though she is not a woman to take the easy option, she finds a way for herself, her family and anyone that comes into her life.

Then she meets the most annoying man who is a like an itch she couldn’t scratch until the self realisation that she had feelings for him  surfaces. What a rollercoaster of emotions, incidents and obstacles they both had to endure before they are together.

Fantastic story. Fantastic writing again from Jean. Fantastic series.

Very much looking forward to her next book already.

Another WWII East End goodie from Jean Fullerton! What’s not to enjoy! This one doesn’t disappoint either.

Catching her fiancé in an act of betrayal, Florence Carmichael has no choice but to return to the family home, a rectory in the heart of Stepney, despite the fact that she frequently disagrees with her strait-laced mother. Not only does she lose her fiancé, she also loses her job, that of a journalist to a very left-wing newspaper.

Fortunately, she is able to get a new job with one of the local newspapers. In the course of that, she meets Inspector Tim Wallace. With her more left-wing views, she sees him as being on the side of the state and the two cross paths – and words – more than one occasion.

Inevitably, as they both seek justice for the considerable loss of food goods from the London Docks, essential for the survival of the country, their paths cross more and more with inevitable consequences, the pair falling in love.

Set in the heart of the East End during the period of the London Blitz, this is an exciting, fast-paced novel which I loved. Jean Fullerton has such a way of bringing the East End to life, even among the ‘baddies’ a talent which is particularly hers.

I always look forward to reading Jean Fullerton, an author with a real gift for story telling. This books follows on from A Stepney Girl’s Secret, although you do not need to have read this to appreciate Felicity’s War.

Felicity, a Politic, an activist, has been working & living with her boyfriend Giles. Arriving home early one day she finds him in bed with a colleague, the phrase “confronted by a pair of undulating buttocks” will never be forgotten!

Fliss returns home to live with her disapproving parents in the vicarage. She meets up with a Detective Inspector, he rescues her initially, they regularly meet as a result of her job as a journalist. It charts their lives as it twists & changes until culminating in a happy ever after.

Another good read.

From the extremely popular author Jean Fullerton this is the next in the series of books featuring the daughters of the rector who were transferred to a parish in London from a sleepy village in Bedfordshire during WW2.

Felicity (Fliss) is very much a staunch Labour supporter, who was living with her boyfriend Giles in a flat in a converted house. ( I didn't like Giles in the previous book , I thought he was very controlling and self opinionated.)

So when Fliss finds him in a compromising position with a work colleague, I was not at all surprised!  Fliss then goes back to her parents and very soon she realises that her mother has no trouble getting any food she requires and when she is working for the East London Chronicle she realises possibly why that is!

A friendship soon forms with a police officer, who is the very same one who rescued her that night when she returned home rather the worse after drinking a bottle of gin, but she doesn't know if she can trust him or any man after her failed relationship with Giles.

What follows is a very good story featuring all the characters I loved in the previous book, centering on Fliss this time and her work,  family and love interest.  Although this follows on from "A Stepney Girl's Secret" it can easily be read as a stand alone story.

I loved the storyline, especially as it contains characters that I enjoyed reading about in the previous books in this series.

Jean Fullerton certainly knows how to keep your attention throughout with close knit families and relationships that you can't help but care about, set in wartime London.

A well deserved five star 🌟 read.

Many years ago my good friend recommended me to books by Jean Fullerton and I so pleased that she did!

Felicity's War is a brilliant read. Set in London in 1941, this book is about Felicity (Fliss) and all the obstacles she has to overcome.

Fliss works for a local paper and is in a relationship with Guy who also works at the paper. On her return from work one day she finds Guy in bed with another woman. Hurt and demoralised she drinks far too much and ends up sitting on a gravestone in the local cemetery.  Next we are introduced to D I Tim Wallace who happens to be in the area where Fliss is. He rescues her and takes her to a night shelter where her sister Prue looks after her.

Fliss doesn't remember much about her intoxicated state, but as the book progresses the reader sees Fliss and D I Wallace often bumping into each other and they become friends. Fliss is a labour activist and often gets into trouble when she demonstrates. D I Wallace doesn't agree with many of Fliss's princioples but over time they both realise that they are falling for one another.

Does the story end on a happy note? Will their relationship overcome many difficulties that stand in their way. You will have to read the book to find out!

This book has been well researched as always by Jean and it is definitely a 5 star read.

I have read many of Jean Fullerton's novels and was delighted to receive a copy of Felicity's War.

Set in London in 1941 the Second World War is raging. Felicity (Fliss) works for a local paper and lives with Guy, also a journalist on the local paper.

One day Fliss arrives home from work to find Guy in bed with another woman. Hurt and upset Fliss drinks far too much and ends up sitting on a grave in the local churchyard.

The reader then meets D I Tim Wallace who rescues Fliss and takes her to the Night Shelter where her sister Prue looks after her.

Fliss is forcved to move back home to live with her parents who live in the local Rectory. Fliss and her mother don't see eye to eye on many things and this makes for a strained living arrangement. Fliss is a labour activist who gets into minor troubles at times when she demonstrates over the scourge of Black Market deals that are rife.

Throughout the book Fliss and D I Wallace become friends and often meet up for a chat and a cup of tea. They both realise that they are falling for each other but neither makes the first move for fear of upsetting their friendship.

Many twists and turns occur throughout the book and the reader is desperate for them to get together properly! Will events prove that this happens or will it drive them further apart??

Jean's research is as always spot on and the reader relives the era vividly.

A cracking read.

Yet again, another fab book about the 1940s era.

Felicity finds herself back home at her parents' house after her boyfriend Giles cheated on her.

When she first meets detective Tim Wallace they do not get on, Felicity is a political journalist and has strong opinions, but over the course of time they get to know one another and end up helping each other fight for hardworking people's justice who are losing out.

Another great saga from Jean and I couldn't put it down, it has a bit of everything rolled into another wonderful book.

Fliss (Felicity Carmichael) catches her fiance cheating on her, so flees to her parents house to get away from the humiliation.

After drowning her sorrows in a bottle and a little worse for wear she is rescued by a young policeman in the cemetary, and a friendship begins, but time will tell if they end up together.

I have enjoyed all of Jean's books, and this was no exception, another fantastic 5 star offering. Highly recommend it.

Oh wow Felicity's war by Jean Fullerton, what an amazing read!

Poor Felicity is in a bad place after her partner cheated on her so she returns to her rectory childhood home where her sister and Hester a Jewish Dr who is hiding there also lives.

This is what is needed for Fliss to pull herself together and so starts a chain of events!

A brilliant 5 star read - more please!!
