I have been meaning to have an outdoor security light installed for a while now. So many to choose from! Mr Beams - what a great name for a lighting company - have a super range of outdoor and indoor lights.

I contacted the company and I have been sent the new outdoor Spotlight XT and the new indoor Amber Universal Light to evaluate.

Both products arrived in less than 24 hours and I eagerly opened the boxes.

Spotlight XT

Main view of spotlight

Let's start with the spotlight. As the website states 'The Spotlight XT is perfect for lighting driveways, gardens, and pathways and for use as a security light. With no mains wiring required the Spotlight can be installed to any surface in a matter of minutes. A motion sensor will pick up motion from 10m away and automatically turn on the light for as long as there is motion present. When movement is no longer detected the Spotlight will automatically turn off after 30 seconds. Spotlight XT has a reflective face for maximum light output.'

The spotlight is not too heavy and is very compact in size measuring 160 x 190mm. It requires 3 x D batteries which do not come with the spotlight. I purchased Duracell ones. These are more expensive but do last longer than other makes in my experience. The spotlight has a long battery life (6 1- 12 months with average usage).

Ready to put spotlight back together

After removing the back panel and inserting three size D batteries, the spotlight was ready to be put to the test! I placed it in a darkened room and the light came on as soon as I went to leave. The LED light is fantastic in terms of brightness. It went out again soon after. 20 seconds is the automatic shut off time. With a range of over 25 square metres, this light is ideal for driveways

Compact and just the job!

Mine was installed in a matter of minutes and I now have a great light that comes on when I am trying to unlock my front door in the dark!

Retailing at £25.95, an excellent value spotlight.

Amber Universal Light

Trying the light out fixed to the wall with backing tape

I have been meaning to buy one of these indoor lights for some time now. Mr Beams website states 'The Universal Light Amber is the perfect night light to illuminate bedrooms, bathrooms, stairs and hallways with gentle Amber LED. The LED will automatically turn on when motion is detected and will automatically turn off 30 seconds after the last movement was detected. With no mains wiring required the Universal light can be simply placed on a shelf or installed in a matter of minutes.'

This is indeed a super lightweight device that shows a lot of light! Again, batteries are neeeded that don't come with the universal light. This time it requires 4 x AA batteries. Duracell again for me. The size is compact measuring : 90 x 100mm

The back was easily removed and the batteries inserted. I placed the light on my table in the dark and the light came on. It automatically shut down after 30 seconds. When I re- entered the room, the light came on and I was about two metres away. It will detect motion up to 3 metres.

More than 3 square metres of light coverage

This is a perfect night light and covering over three square metres of light, an ideal present for an elderly loved one, or indeed for yourself to save on power from the light switch. I have placed mine on the landing near the bathroom and am very impressed with it. The light can be fixed to the wall with the screws which are included if that is preferred to using backing tape. Retailing at £10.95, good value in my opinion.

Both items come with FREE DELIVERY within the UK.

There are many other devices for the home and garden to see on the comprehensive website. With Fathers Day in June, why not take a look at an ideal gift?
